Conditions
  • Children must have a valid passport or identity card in their own name and be able to show this to verify their age.
  • Children must have all the required visas or other immigration documents for the countries they are travelling through.
  • Children aged up to and including 13 must always travel accompanied by an adult. They are not allowed to travel alone.
 
Aged up to 5
  • Must always travel accompanied by an adult.
  • Reserving a seat or berth is not compulsory; they are allowed to share a seat or berth with a paying passenger. Without a seat or berth of their own, they travel free of charge and without a ticket
  • If they do desire a seat of their own, they travel at the children's fare.
 
Aged 6 up to and including 14
  • Must always travel accompanied by an adult.
  • Travel at the children's fare.
  • Must always reserve a seat or berth their own.
 
Familienabteil [Family compartment]
  • The Familienabteil is a compartment with six berths for a maximum of three adults and three children aged up to and including 14. 
 
Ladies' compartment
  • A compartment with four berths for women and girls only.
  • Boys travelling with their mothers are not allowed in here. In that case, a compartment of their own or a berth in a regular (mixed) compartment must be booked.
