Can I check in and out with my OV-chipkaart at a gate with a barcode reader?
Yes, you can. All NS gates have have an integrated barcode and OV-chipkaart reader. Holding your OV-chipkaart against the lit panel on the right checks you in and out.
Please note: Do not use your OV-chipkaart when making an international journey, neither when leaving the Netherlands nor when returning from abroad.
When making an international journey, buy an international ticket for the entire trip, which means from your departure station in the Netherlands to your destination in another country.
An NS season ticket gives you a discount on the part of your international journey within the Netherlands.
This discount is applied to the price of your international ticket when you state during booking that you have an NS season ticket.
If there is an NS season ticket on your OV-chipkaart, take your OV-chipkaart with you so you can show that you are entitled to a discount when your ticket is checked.
Open the gates with the square barcode on your printed international homeprint ticket or mobile ticket in the NS International App.
Please note: We do not recommend scanning your international ticket as a PDF at the check-in gates. If you open the gate with the ticket as a PDF on your phone, there is a risk that the gate will not open or that you will pay € 20 because you will check in with your credit or debit card instead of your ticket. You can prevent this by printing the ticket or scanning the barcode from the NS International App.
If you have accidentally checked in with your bank card, you can correct this via the Travel history of OVpay.
