Discount on an international train ticket with a Student travel product

Week or weekend season ticket for students 
As a holder of a Student travel product you can also receive a 40% or 100% discount on the Dutch part of an international the journey, dependig on the day and the time  you travel.
  • The Student travel product is not valid only on Eurostar trains to Belgium/France, Eurostar to London, ÖBB Nightjet and Eurocity Direct between Rotterdam Centraal and Hazeldonk border.
  • Please note: specfic discount rates (such as Early Bird or Sparpreis Europa) that cannot be combined with a discount pass sometimes prove to be less expensive than a standard fare with 40% discount for students. 
  
Booking a ticket 
You book your journey from the departure station in the Netherlands to your final destination abroad on one ticket. When booking, please indicate whether you are entitled to a discount on the Dutch route. The discount is settled in the price of the ticket.
  • The Student travel product only entitles you to a 100% discount in 2nd class
  • If you want to travel in 1st class, you need to buy a 1st class international ticket and load an upgrade to 1st class on your OV-chip card.
      
Discount percentage  
  • Holders of a weekly season ticket travel on the Dutch route (only in 2nd class):
    • With a 100% discount:
      • From Monday 04.00 hrs to Saturday 04.00 hrs, (except in the summer period and on Dutch Public Holidays).
      • On Good Friday
    • With a 40% discount:
      • From Saturday 04.00 hrs to Monday 04.00 hrs
      • During the summer period
      • On public holidays
         
  • Holders of a weekend season ticket travel on the Dutch route (only in 2nd class):
    • With a 100% discount:
      • From Friday 12.00 hrs to Monday 04:00 hrs
      • On public holidays
    • With a 40% discount:
      • On Monday from 04.00 hrs, on Tuesday to Thursday from 09.00 hrs and on Friday from 09.00 to 12.00 hrs.
    • Without a discount:
      • From Tuesday to Friday before 09.00 hrs
      • On the day before Good Friday, before Koningsdag (27 April), before Liberation Day (5 May) and before Ascension Day: as on Fridays.
      • In the summer period: as during the rest of the year
  
Supplements and reservations 
Passengers with a student-travel product: 
  • do not pay a supplement if they are using ICE International within the Netherlands. 
  • do not receive a discount on seat and sleeping reservations. 
  • pay the normal supplement for Intercity direct. 
  
100% discount domestically and abroad 
You do not need to purchase a ticket if you are entitled to free travel on both the domestic and international route. However, you must be able to show both season tickets to the train manager during the train journey and travel in the class that corresponds with the class of your season ticket.
  
Where can you buy the ticket
And how to indicate the correct discount percentage: 
  • At the NS International service desk in the Service shop, from NS International Customer service or from a travel agent
  •  The sales person selects the following for the discount code: 
    • VDU (discount on the NS Route)
    • GNA (100% discount in the Netherlands) 
  • Online via NSInternational.nl 
    • Click on Discount and loyalty cards
    • Tick the box next to : 'Discount on NS route' or 'Free on NS route'. 
    • If you are entitled to a different discount percentage on the outward journey than on the return journey, you should make two separate bookings. 
  • Using the ticket machine or NS service desk (these offer a restricted range (without a seat reservation) to destinations in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany). 
    • Select: Discount on NS route or Free on NS route 
    • If you are entitled to a different discount percentage on the outward journey than on the return journey, you should make two separate bookings with the NS service desk (this is not possible at NS ticket machines).
