You must be able to show a valid travel document (passport or ID card) during a train journey to another country.
Please note: you need a valid passport for travel to the United Kingdom. An ID card is not accepted. For travel dates from 2 April 2025 you need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the United Kingdom. You must always be able to show proof of identity (passport, ID card or driving licence) when travelling by train in the Netherlands. Identification is compulsory in the Netherlands for everyone from the age of 14.
