Do I have to make a reservation in advance and do I get a fixed seat on the train?

  • TGV, Eurostar and ÖBB Nightjet
    A seat reservation is compulsory and included in the ticket.
 
  • ICE and Intercity Berlin
    Making a reservation is not compulsory for ICE International to Germany / Switzerland or for Intercity Berlin, but highly recommended.  
    • If you are travelling in first class with a Flexpreis fare, a seat reservation is included.
    • If you are travelling in first class with a (Super)Sparpreis fare, a seat reservation is not included. A first class seat reservation costs € 5,90 per person per single journey.  
    • For second class, a seat reservation is not included. A second class seat reservation costs € 4,90 per person per single journey. 

      When you book a ticket, you can indicate whether you want to make a seat reservation. We recommend that you do reserve a seat.
      If you have not made a reservation online, you can still do so later online via Buy a seat reservation for ICE and Intercity Berlin. You can also add a reservation to your booking via NS International Customer Service on +31 30 2300023 or at a NS International Servicedesk in the Service & Tickets store. We charge a € 5 booking fee for separate seat reservations. 

       
    • For the travel period 1 June 1 to 1 September (included), 2024
      A seat reservation is mandatory for both 1st and 2nd class tickets for all fares for ICE, Intercity Berlin and ÖBB Nightjet Basel/Zürich.
      If you book a ticket and seat reservation at the same time, the reservation in 1st and 2nd class is free.
      For a separate seat reservation, for example for passengers with a Eurail/Interrail pass, the regular price applies.
 
  • Intercity Brussels
    Reservations are not possible for the Intercity Brussels, there is a free choice of seats.
 
  • How can I find my reserved seat?
    A reserved seat, couchette or berth are indicated on your ticket with coach and seat number.
    A reserved seat, couchette or berth are indicated in the train on a display above or on the space.
