Germany » Common fare points and +City

Validity of tickets

There are two potential situations:
  • When a passenger travels across the border and uses Fernverkehr (ICE, Railjet, IC or EC), in certain situations the text '+City' is printed on the ticket after the name of the German station. This means the ticket is also valid in the local public transport (S-bahn (light rail), U-bahn (metro), Strassenbahn (tram) or bus) from/to the train station.
    • Conditions for a +City ticket
      • (Super)Sparpreis:
        • The route starts or ends at an S-bahn (light rail), U-bahn (metro), Strassenbahn (tram) or bus station in Germany. The name of the actual departure/destination of the journey must be entered when making the booking.
          • Please note: It is only possible to book a ticket to an S-Bahn station, not to a U-Bahn, Strassenbahn or bus station. However, the +City ticket is valid for all S-Bahn, U-Bahn (metro), Strassenbahn (tram) or bus stations in the respective +City area. If necessary, book a fictional S-Bahn station near the passenger's destination.
        • A small surcharge will be added to the ticket price.
        • May be used for 1 journey within the city to/from the train station, with S-Bahn (light rail), U-Bahn (metro), Strassenbahn (tram) or bus.
      • Flexpreis:
        • The customer must travel with a ticket from category A (ICE/Railjet) or B (IC or EC).
        • Included in the ticket price.
        • May be used for 1 journey within the city to/from the train station, with S-Bahn (light rail), U-Bahn (metro), Strassenbahn (tram) or bus.
  • When a passenger travels across the border and does not use Fernverkehr (ICE, Railjet, IC or EC), the ticket is valid until the final destination as indicated in the travel itinerary. A different station may be printed on the ticket, but since the station is a common fare point, the passenger is allowed to continue his journey to one of the stations within the common fare zone. See the attachment 'Common fare points Germany' for a comprehensive list of stations that are common fare points.
