Travelling with a wheelchair (electric or otherwise) or mobility scooter
  • There is no reduced fare for passengers with a disability; they travel at the regular fare.
  • There is a wheelchair compartment on most Nightjet trains. This compartment is a berth with couchettes for one wheelchair user and one accompanying passenger. There is also space for the wheelchair.
  • A wheelchair user gets the NJ tickets along with a seat reservation in the wheelchair accessible compartment. There is no need for a separate ticket for the Companion. 
    • The NJ to Basel/Zürich also offers a number of wheelchair seats (no couchettes) in the seating coaches. For these seats, you do need to book a separate (free) ticket for the Companion.  
  • The wheelchair compartments can be found in the following carriages:
    • Nightjet Wien/Innsbruck:
      • Berth: carriage 251 and 281.
    • Nightjet Basel/Zürich: 
      • Berth: carriage 181. Please note: carriage 181 stops at Basel and does not continue to Zürich. 
      • Seats: carriage 152 and 153
  • An assistance dog is welcome on board and travels for free. 
  • If a Companion travels along, the passenger with a disability must hold an OV-Begeleiderskaart [Public Transport Companion Card]. 
  • Maximum dimensions of electric wheelchairs, handbikes and mobility scooters:
    • Length up to 125 cm
    • Width up to 80 cm
    • Height up to 109 cm
    • Total weight of wheelchair and passenger is a maximum of 250 kg.
  • There is a wheelchair toilet next to the wheelchair compartment.

Travelling with a visual impairment
  • There is no special fare for visually impaired travellers, they travel for the regular fares. 
  • However, there is a reduced fare for an accompanying passenger: the Companion fare. One companion may travel for this fare. If more companions travel with you, they travel for a regular fare.
  • If a companion travels with you, the visually impaired traveller must carry an OV-Begeleiderskaart
  • Assistance dogs travel free of charge and without a ticket.

  • You can request assistance when getting on and off a train from NS Travel assistance
  • Travel assistance concerns help getting on and off the train. It is not possible to request assistance with luggage.
  • Apply for travel assistance well in advance, it is possible up to 36 hours before departure at the latest.
